- The Bestiary: A Book of Beasts

Bestiaries were catalogs of animal stories, combining zoological information, myths, and legends. The author of this edition provides an excellent appendix that explains how the creatures of the bestiary influenced the development of allegory and symbolism in art and literature. - A Comparative View of the Human and Animal Frame

The textual explanations of variation in animal form did not yet reflect the influence of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory, but the detailed illustrations added much to the understanding of mammalian anatomy.
The Galapagos Collection

This collection is currently made up of text based materials exploring the unique flora and fauna
of the Galapagos Islands. We will soon be adding some stunning photographs of the area that were recently
on display at the Zoology museum. A particularly interesting text, with images of the animals, is the

Image Collections
Africa Focus: Image and Sound Collection

This contains more than 3000 slides, 500 photographs, and 50 hours of sound from forty-five different
African countries. Go to Search the Collection and at the very top of the page there is an option titled,
“atlas search” which allows users to find images and audio based on African region.
SouthEast Asian Image Collection

Currently this collection focuses on the Phillipines during the first half of the 20th century and
Laos during the 1950s and 1960s. The collection also has an atlas search and new images of Thailand
and Cambodia will be added in the coming months.
State of Wisconsin Collection

Any number of collections would be appropriate for use in the classroom. There are dozens of image
collections within the State of Wisconsin Collection that show a variety of Wisconsin communities.

Playing House: Homemaking for Children

These five texts represent domestic manuals that were often written to assist the “woman of the house”
while others aimed at educating young girls, the homemakers of the future. This collection includes
digitized versions of books from the UW-Madison collections spanning 1877 to the 1930’s.
The Housekeeper’s Book: comprising advice on the conduct of household affairs...prepared
for the use of American housekeepers... (1837)

This detailed level of household information is useful for the historical study of material culture
and everyday life. Since the book was published in Philadelphia in 1837, it gives important insight
into the material culture of the early United States.

This book is a readable and informative "conduct book" directed to young women of the early 19th century.
This detailed level of information on behavior and personal adornment is useful for the historical study
of material culture and everyday life.
