Little Magazine Interview Index
2,000 citations, added 9/19/2007
The Little Magazine Collection, one of the most extensive of its kind in the United States, holds approximately 7,000 English-language literary magazines published in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia/New Zealand, mostly in the 20th century. Little magazines are non-commercial and avant-garde in nature, often associated with significant literary, cultural, and artistic movements. They feature the work of established as well as obscure writers, many of whom eventually achieved critical and public recognition as a result of those early publications. They have been especially influential in the historical development of modern and experimental poetry.

Lesson Plans Available
Today, kids turn to the web for answers as quickly as they turn to books. We want them to be able to assess web content for quality and dependability and one of the first steps is to introduce them to reliable and historically important digital content. UW Digital Collections offer primary resources which allow users to make their own interpretations of historical events, build critical thinking skills and offer a direct path to historical events. We now have a lesson plan portal available on our site at http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/Collections.shtml to help bring our content into the classroom. It also has information on getting involved. If you would like to write lesson plans or modify your existing lesson plans based on our content check out our program that pays you for your work.

This collection contains over four thousand color slides and black and white photographs of medieval
Spain taken by the late Eugene Casselman (1912-1996) during his thirty years of travel throughout
the Iberian peninsula. The images span over one thousand years of architectural history, from the
seventh to the seventeenth century. The majority of the slides focus on the Mudejar style, an ornate
court style largely inspired by Spanish Islamic architecture that was shared among Islamic, Jewish,
and Christian cultures during the later Middle Ages in Spain. Eugene Casselman taught voice and music
history at Gustavus Adolphus College (Red Wing, MN), Colorado Technical College (Colorado Springs,
CO), Downer College (Milwaukee, WI), and Lawrence University (Appleton, WI). He exhibited some of
the photographs from this collection in 1983 at the then Elvehjem Museum of Art. The slides and photographs
were donated to the Department of Art History by Eugene Casselman’s widow, Frances, and his children.

This digital collection was a collaborative book arts, writing and journaling project for the
people of south central Wisconsin. The book collection was originally hosted by the South Central
Library System (SCLS), and produced by the Bone Folders Guild (BFG), a book arts group based in Madison.
This project was supported by a Madison CitiARTS grant. The BFG book artists created sixty handmade
blank books. Each book was catalogued into each of the sixty libraries in the South Central Library
System. Unlike other library books, patrons were invited to write, draw, paint or collage in the books,
producing community-wide collaborative works of art. A variety of ages, styles and mediums are represented
in the books offering a vibrant look at the participating communities.

According to the Wisconsin Deparment of Natural Resources,
Wisconsin has 98 state parks, over 15,000 lakes, and nearly 2,000 miles of trails. Along with being
Ice Cream Month, this is also National Recreation and Parks Month, which the National Recreation and
Parks Association states is intended to call attention to the value of parks and recreation.
You can learn more about Wisconsin's natural resources by exploring the digital collections.
The Ecology and Natural Resources Collection houses the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources Reports which contain reports on a variety of topics including,
fish populations, lakeshore development, and wetlands management. If you are more interested in recreation,
take some time exploring our State
of Wisconsin image collection. You can find historical images of lakes, rivers and campgrounds
from all over Wisconsin.

From Our Collection - Ice Cream Month

Did you know that July is Ice Cream Month?
Back in 1984, President Reagan designated July as the official month to commemorate this tasty
treat. In many ways, ice cream is the quintessential American sweet. Golda Meir, in her memoir, My
Life, connected ice cream to her life in the big city. "I was delighted by my pretty new clothes,
by the soda pop and ice cream and by the excitement of being in a real skyscraper, the first five-story
building I had ever seen. In general, I thought Milwaukee was wonderful."
And, or course, Wisconsin is the dairy state and no stranger to the pleasures of ice cream. Learn
about the history of the ice cream freezer in the Transactions of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences,
Arts and Letters, 1932 and read about ice cream and World War II in an article from The Milwaukee
Milk Operator, which states, "Many stories of the part ice cream plays in maintaining the spirits
of soldiers under the pressure of war have been told in press and on the radio. Ice cream is important
in maintaining morale on the 'home front' too." Both can be found in our State
of Wisconsin Collection. Enjoy!

Premier steamboat collection at UW-L going online by Jenny Dolan, La Crosse
Tribune
Murphy Librarys collection of 51,000 steamboat and river-related photographs is making waves
worldwide.
A man from Italy recently called the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse library, wanting to know
more about a steamboat his relative rode, said Linda Sondreal, special collections librarian at UW-L.
The man planned to build a model of the boat, she said. Someday, he and other steamboat buffs will
be able find the steamboats by surfing the Internet.

You will soon be able to view Murphy Librarys extensive steamboat photo collection without heading to the library. A news conference to announce a UW-La Crosse agreement with the UW Digital Collection Center (UWDCC) at UW-Madison to digitize Murphy Library's collection of steamboat photography is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, in 155 Murphy Library Special Collections.

During the 18th-19th centuries, published books provided ideas and patterns for replication in home decoration. Today, these pattern books may
be the only remaining design evidence for objects and rooms no longer in existence. These pattern books are a valuable resource for those studying the
decorative arts and material culture of the period. H. W. and A. Arrowsmith ("decorators to Her Majesty" in 1840) provide 61 illustrations of wall painting
and decoration, along with text explanations. Illustrations show full wall views, often in color, as well as large scale details. This volume enhances
the collection of architectural and furniture pattern books already in the Digital Library for the Decorative Arts and Material Culture.

Cartas e outras obras selectas do Marquez de Pombal [selection]
10 images/ added 2/15/2007
Written by Sebastio de Melo the first Marquis of Pombal, who was a leading politician in the government of Joseph I of Portugal, the selected letter
is important for several reasons. Into the twentieth century, it was common practice for scholars to copy by hand any text that was thought interesting
or useful. This letter may actually be the letter used for later printed editions. Of particular interest, the foot of the last page states in different
handwriting, "To be published: Committee of Censorship, Lisboa, 21 October 1820." Through the digitization of this manuscript, scholars can compare it
to the print edition, which is also a rare title and held by UW Special Collections. This letter also represents the first Portuguese text to be included
in the Ibero-American collection and is the librarys first attempt to establish a collaborative digitizing project with the Humanities Library of the
University of Lisbon.
