The Aldo Leopold Digitization Project
The Aldo Leopold Foundation contracted with the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center (UWDCC) to digitize the Leopold papers. The UWDCC was chosen because of its extensive experience with digitization projects, having digitized over 1,300,000 pages of text and 42,000 images in its various collections.
General information about the UWDCC is available at: http://uwdcc.library.wisc.edu/.
The textual material was digitized and published online using UWDCC's Electronic Facsimile Text platform. Documentation for this model is available at http://uwdcc.library.wisc.edu/contentProv/projectModels.shtml.
General information on the UWDCC's standards for reformatting, metadata, and other digital issues is available at http://uwdcc.library.wisc.edu/resources/index.shtml. Metadata guidelines conform to Dublin Core standards and therefore should be "migratable" to future media.
The non-bound archival materials will be scanned using flatbed scanners. Bound materials, such as the diaries and journals, will be scanned using an overhead BetterLight scanner. Images will be saved as high resolution TIFF images and three copies are stored on LTO tapes, one on site and two off site. Images will be presented online as JPG2000.
For information on equipment used in the UWDCC, see Overview of Reformatting Equipment in the UWDCC.
New materials will be added to this collection throughout 2008. Series 9/25/10-7: Diaries and Journals were the first materials to be digitized and were launched in mid February 2008. Series 9/25/10-1: Correspondence (covering mostly Leopold's years at the University of Wisconsin, 1933-1948) will be available next.
The materials will be available on a UWDCC Web page and also linked through the EAD guide for the collection (see Finding Aid). The Aldo Leopold Foundation will also create a separate Web page for the collection.
Project costs were estimated at approximately $2.50 per page. This figure includes general project management and metadata creation, scanning, and quality control for each page.
