The University of Wisconsin-Madison Archives collects and preserves a variety of artifacts, ephemeral material and three dimensional objects that document campus history. These items have been collected over the years from university departments, faculty, staff, alumni or other entities connected to our university. Main collecting areas include clothing and hats, key documents, posters and artwork, medals and awards, dance cards, pins and jewelry, banners, sports memorabilia, and other items that document unique campus traditions and events. There are over 1,000 artifacts currently housed in the University Archives, located in Steenbock Library on campus. A representative sample of items from the UW-Madison Archives Artifacts and Ephemera Collection are presented here.
Some campus departments or colleges maintains their own collection of artifacts related to campus history and faculty research including the Physics Museum, the Geology Museum and the Zoology Museum. Other area repositories that collect and preserve artifacts related to campus and/or Madison history include the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum and the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.
